PLASTICS OVERVIEW

The most used synthetic material in the world, plastic is known to be one of the most versatile materials and can be found everywhere in both commercial, industrial, and military use. Different types of plastics can be used for different use cases, whether an application requires high strength, high flexibility, corrosion and chemical resistance, temperature resistance, or lighter weight.

Certain plastics are composed of different material compounds to specialize in a particular mechanical property. Telfon, PVDF, and polypropylene can typically be found in ultrahigh purity plumbing systems that require the use of plastics over traditional metals like stainless steel. Plastics like ABS, polycarbonate, and polyethylene can be used to be create rigid plastic structures to house items or devices. 

Plastics can be machined to form virtually anything. Machine shops can form enclosures for instrumentation and enclosures using plastics of high strength such as ABS. Fittings and valves are often manufactured with plastics to provide among the highest chemical and corrosion resistance without any risk of affecting the fluid being transmitted when in contact with plastic. Structural frames and hulls for the automotive and aerospace can be also machined for cheap but effective parts.
