MARAGING STEEL OVERVIEW
Maraging steels are certain alloys of steels that are heat treated or "aged" to increase the strength of steel while maintaining its ductility and its ability to formed into desirable parts and components. By redefining the existing grain structure of steels through heat treatment, the non-iron metals within steel such as molybdenum, nickel, titanium, and other intermetallic compounds can be resettled into more ideal structures which in turn increasing the strength of the material.
With its increased strength compared to other steels, maraging steels can be found to make up a majority of critical components in major assemblies, such as tooling, gears, shafts, armor plating, and other important machined parts in aerospace and defense. A high strength-to-weight ratio allows maraging steel to be designed for smaller parts subjected to higher loads and stresses.
Maraging steels properties and ease of machinability make it a common material that machine shops use to produce components for various industries. Products such as fittings, valves, pump components, shafts, and gears are commonly manufactured with maraging steels. Tooling such as molds and dies for injection molding processes are also made with maraging steel for its reliability against wear and repeat use.
