DESIGNING AND BUILDING CONTROL PANELS
For industrial machines, control panels are where the majority of electrical components are located to power and control a machine in a safe and enclosed space. Control panels offer a centralized area where components can be placed and maintained in orderly fashion after installation. Within this safe enclosure, regulated power comes into the panel and activates critical components of a machine to allow it to function and complete the processes we need to complete tasks.
When an electrical schematic is received, it is often the responsibility for the panel designer to translate wiring into an actual layout of components in a control panel. This includes making a proper selection of circuit breakers or fuses for overcurrent protection, PLCs for ease of control for various inputs and outputs, VFD or soft starters for motor startup and optional variable speed control, mechanical and solid state relays for activation of high voltage applications, and more.
Depending on certain environmental factors, control panel enclosures can be specifically chosen to be resistant to environmental factors and outdoor use such as water and dust resistance or be capable of operating in hazardous locations with explosion resistance. In extreme heat or cold temperatures, panel builders can often equip enclosures with heaters and air conditioning to ensure components operate at optimal temperatures in isolation from the environment outside its box. These configurations, on top of the components of that allow for regular function, make specifications for control panel fabrication extremely important due to the many factors that need to be considered to ensure that a machine runs optimally.
